Explain about various type of schedulers you know . Also discuss the purpose of each.

There are three types of schedulers – long-term , medium term and short term schedulers .

the possible traversal paths of jobs the components and queues, depicted by rectangles, c The primary places of action of the three types of schedulers are marked with down-arrows. In fig. a submitted batch job joins the batch queue while Batch waiting to be processed by Jobs the long-term scheduler. Once scheduled for execu- tion, processes spawned by the batch job enter the ready.

There are three main types of schedulers in operating systems, which are short-term, medium-term, and long-term:

  • Short-term scheduler
  • Also known as the CPU scheduler, this scheduler selects a process from the ready queue and allocates CPU to it. It executes more frequently than the long-term scheduler and is responsible for increasing system performance.
  • Medium-term scheduler
  • This scheduler removes processes from memory and is responsible for swapping out processes. Swapping moves processes from main memory to disk and vice versa to improve the process mix.
  • Long-term scheduler
  • Also known as the job scheduler, this scheduler selects processes from the pool and loads them into memory for execution. It controls the degree of multiprogramming by selecting a mix of IO and CPU bound processes.
