What are the three main purposes of an operating System ?

The three main purposes  of an OS are:

  • Resource management
  • Manage the computer’s resources, such as the central processing unit (CPU), memory, disk drives, and printers

  • Process management
  • Manage the execution of programs and processes, including scheduling, synchronization, and communication between them

  • User interface
  • Provide a user-friendly interface for users to interact with the computer and its applications 

Here are some other purposes  of an OS:

  • Memory management: Manage the main or primary memory
  • Processor management/scheduling: Manage the processor
  • Device management: Manage device communication via their respective drivers
